Can YOU do tech too?

When I was teaching full-time, I often heard my students say things like, “I can’t do _______.” Fill in the blank with math, writing, taking a test, sports…whatever they felt challenged by.

Often, they would justify their perceived inadequacies by blaming them on genetics by saying something like, “Yeah, my mom/dad/sister/brother can’t do _______ either.” As if they have no choice in the matter. Their relatives sucked at ________, so they do too. Period.

Now that I’m out of the classroom, I also hear this but now it’s all about the tech.

“I can’t ‘do’ tech.” Or, “I don’t ‘get’ tech,” though my clients don’t blame their genetics like my teenage students did. They blame their own lack of intelligence or their age.

The teacher in me balks at this every time because I don’t’ like hearing brilliant confident women shrink at the challenge of managing or creating their websites.

Instead of someone who can’t do it, I hear someone who is super frustrated and doesn’t believe they have the ability to learn technology.

And that, my friend, is a lie.

That’s why I told you in the title of this email that YOU (yes, you) are a tech wizard. You might not enjoy the technical aspects of running your online business, but I believe that you CAN learn to do it.

It’s really all about shifting to a growth mindset when it comes to tech and your website, to a belief that it is possible to figure this shiz out.

That’s when learning happens – when we believe that our brains have the capability of changing, growing.

I believe that at the beginning of your business journey, you should be familiar with how all of the technical pieces fit together, like your website, your email, your scheduling.

You should also be able to “run” this stuff on your own if necessary. Why? Because it’s YOUR business. I’m all about handing stuff off to team members to help me out, but if they’re unavailable? If they quit? I need to be able to do it myself and train their replacement.

When it comes to tech, I’ve obviously got a growth mindset. I like to dive in and tackle this stuff. It’s fun for me to figure it out while I know there are others who would rather eat glass than dive into the back-end of their website.

This coming year, I’ll be tackling some other areas of my life where I do have more of a fixed mindset, I’m looking forward to really working on tearing those beliefs down that are holding me back.

I’ve been doing a lot of deep soul writing about it, talking to some of my biz besties about breaking through some of these beliefs and also holding me accountable because changing our beliefs, stepping into the discomfort, and growing is so much easier and way more fun with support than it is going it alone.

Learning tech is also WAY easier with support than tackling it alone.

If you need help, I’m an email (or strategy session) away, and I love teaching and working with my clients to break through their “I can’t do tech” beliefs and teach them to be their own webmasters.

Have a super lovely holiday with your family. I’ll be taking the next two weeks off, but I’ll be back after the first of the year.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear what beliefs you’re working on tearing down in your own life. Leave a comment and let me know!

xo,

Amy
